Se Levanta is a song cycle set amidst a blackout in post-hurricane María, Puerto Rico. The US government has turned a blind eye to a mounting humanitarian crisis and rising death toll. Unlike the news coverage at the time, Se Levanta hones in on the unsung heroes leading recovery efforts: hurricane-stricken residents. Each song tells individual stories of how residents marshaled scarce resources, opened their homes to homeless neighbors, and brought music (a much-needed catharsis) to those suffering from the loss of friends, family and employment. Se Levanta depicts stories of transformation from trauma to resilience. Through rescuing our communities we discover a higher purpose in life, even if it means putting our life in danger.
